What is prompt tracking?

Prompt tracking is repeating a fixed list of buyer questions in AI engines and logging what comes back: mentions, citations, sentiment, and competitors. The list stays stable so a later change reflects the answers, not a new set of questions. It is monitoring, not a rank the engines publish.

Why it matters for AI visibility

One-off chats are anecdotes. Prompt tracking turns them into a series you can compare. It matters for AI visibility because assistants vary from run to run and from country to country. A single screenshot cannot support a trend. A useful tracker records the prompt text, engine, date, whether the brand was named, the cited URLs, and a short note on tone. Keep the sample modest enough that someone actually reads outliers. Add a prompt when buyers start asking it, and mark the date you added it so the history does not pretend the new prompt was always in the set. Tracking does not cause citations. It tells you which prompts are already won, which are unstable, and which never name you, so content and outreach have a target.

Example

Every Monday a team runs twenty prompts in two engines and stores the cited domains. When a docs page is rewritten, they do not change the prompts. Four weeks later they compare citation presence on those same twenty. Any new prompt from a sales call is added on a separate line with its start date.

Related terms

Prompt volume is how large that tracked set is, and it is not a public search-volume figure. Citation share and LLM visibility are summaries you compute from the log. Query fan-out is a reason to add follow-up prompts, not a reason to abandon the original list.
