What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of earning the answer itself, not only a ranked link. It started with featured snippets and similar result features, and it now includes AI answers that resolve a question on the results page or inside a chat. AEO and GEO overlap, and neither one guarantees placement.

Why it matters for AI visibility

People searching with a full question often leave with the answer in front of them. If your page is the one that supplied that answer, you may earn the citation and the click. If a competitor’s page or a publisher’s roundup supplies it, you can be invisible even when you rank nearby. AEO matters for AI visibility because assistants reward passages that state the answer early, name the subject, and stay specific enough to quote. The practical work is the same discipline as writing for a hurried buyer: one claim per passage, the audience and the constraint in the sentence, and a next step that is honest about fit. Treat AEO as a content standard you can audit. Do not treat it as a switch that forces ChatGPT or Google to select you.

Example

A help-center article titled “Pricing” opens with a slogan. Rewriting the first sentences to state who the plan is for, what is included, and what it costs makes that passage usable as an answer. Whether an engine cites it still depends on the question, the other sources, and the engine.

Related terms

AEO is the older sibling of generative engine optimization. Zero-click search is the outcome AEO often produces, and prompt tracking is how you check whether your answers are the ones assistants actually use. Use all three names precisely so a snippet win is not reported as an AI citation.
