What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is Google’s conversational search experience inside Search. People can ask follow-up questions, and the answers can include links to supporting pages. It draws on Google Search. It is a different surface from a classic list of blue links and from AI Overviews.

Why it matters for AI visibility

AI Mode matters because a buyer can stay in a back-and-forth with Google and never open the ten blue links. The sources beside those answers are a citation channel of their own. Google has described this experience as using its Search systems, including related searches that broaden which pages can be retrieved. You cannot see every internal query, but you can see the answer and the links you are shown. Track a fixed prompt list in AI Mode the same way you track other engines: same wording, a note of the country and language, and the exact URLs cited. A page that ranks for the head term can still be absent if the answer is built from a narrower follow-up. Eligibility for Search, including being indexed, still applies.

Example

You ask AI Mode which project tools suit a small design studio. The reply mentions two products and links to a review article plus one vendor’s use-case page. Your tracking log records those two URLs and whether your brand was named. A later follow-up question is logged as its own prompt if you intend to track it.

Related terms

AI Overviews are the summary block on the results page. Query fan-out is the expansion of one question into related questions that can change which sources appear. Grounding, in this setting, is the link between the written answer and those retrieved pages.
