What is AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are Google’s AI-written summaries that can appear above classic search results. They answer the query in the results page and can show supporting links. They use Google Search systems. Google does not ask sites to add special markup just for these summaries.
Why it matters for AI visibility
An AI Overview can satisfy a question before anyone scrolls to organic links, so the cited pages become the ones a searcher sees first. That matters for AI visibility even for teams that never open ChatGPT, because the overview is still an AI answer attached to a Google query. Inclusion is not promised. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search, including snippet eligibility where that applies. Supporting links may come from pages that answer a related part of the question, not only from the classic top result for the exact query. The useful habit is to search the buyer prompts in Google, record whether an overview appears, and log the linked URLs beside your other engines. Treat a missing overview as a Search eligibility and relevance question, not as a missing chatbot plugin.
Example
A query for a category comparison shows an AI Overview with three links: a publisher roundup, a vendor page, and a forum thread. Your product is named only inside the roundup. The overview cited the roundup, not your site. Your next step is to read that roundup, not to add a new tag to your homepage and assume the overview will switch.

Google AI Mode is the more conversational Search experience and often expands one query into related searches, called query fan-out. Zero-click search is the pattern of answering without a visit. AI Overviews are one Google surface where that pattern shows up.
